In 2024, Bronny James took the next major step in his basketball career when he declared for the NBA Draft after spending one season at USC. The Los Angeles Lakers selected the 6-foot-2 guard in the second round with the 55th overall pick.

Despite the excitement surrounding his arrival, James’ transition to the NBA has been far from smooth. His rookie campaign was largely developmental as the Lakers opted to split his time between the NBA roster and their G-League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. At the NBA level he saw very limited minutes, appearing in just 27 games, while most of his big performances came in the G-League where he averaged 21.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists across 11 games during the 2024-25 season.

There was optimism entering the 2025-26 campaign that James’ second season would represent a step forward. Instead, the year has followed a similar pattern. Through 32 NBA games, James has averaged 2.1 points, 0.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 39.7% from the field and 41.4% from three-point range in 7.0 minutes per game.

At the G-League level, however, he has continued to play at his best. In 11 games with the South Bay Lakers, he has averaged 15.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 54.5% from the field and 42.6% from beyond the arc.

On Friday, the Lakers announced that James has once again been reassigned to the G-League, just three days after briefly recalling him to the active roster ahead of the team’s matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He was not part of the Lakers’ active lineup Thursday when the team hosted the Chicago Bulls. Instead, Los Angeles leaned heavily on its star core in what turned into another impressive offensive performance.

The Lakers defeated the Bulls 142-130, extending their winning streak to four games. Luka Doncic led the way with a dominant 51 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, while Austin Reaves added 30 points and Deandre Ayton contributed 23 points and 10 rebounds. LeBron James finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the victory.

While James continues to search for consistent NBA minutes, the Lakers themselves are trending upward. The team currently holds the third-best record in the Western Conference and appears to be hitting its stride as the regular season enters its final stretch.

Los Angeles will next host the Denver Nuggets on Saturday before beginning a five-game road trip starting Monday against the Houston Rockets. It remains to be seen whether head coach JJ Redick will recall Bronny for those games, and if the young guard will finally receive extended minutes as he continues his development during his second NBA season.
