Bronny James’ third season with the Los Angeles Lakers has started off on a rough note. The Lakers continued their dominant start to the 2026-27 NBA season, defeating the Portland Trail Blazers 124-118 at home. The result moved the Lakers to the top of the Western Conference standings and extended their winning streak to four games.
While the Lakers have received important contributions from their established players, James has been working to find opportunities to develop.
The 22-year-old guard was sent to the Coachella Valley Lakers on Thursday ahead of the affiliate’s season opener against the Salt Lake City Stars. James made the most of the opportunity, finishing with 22 points, five rebounds and seven assists as Coachella Valley secured a 104-98 victory. Rookie Cameron Carr also started the game, with both guards scoring the team’s first two baskets.
Following Friday’s win over Portland, the Lakers announced that they have recalled James and Carr from the Coachella Valley Lakers. Head coach JJ Redick told reporters that the two guards would rejoin the NBA team for its upcoming three-game road trip, which includes stops against the Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks.
“The messaging was very simple,” Redick said about James’ G League assignment. “It’s just: you guys need reps and you guys need to play” (h/t Benjamin Royer of Orange County Register).
James himself acknowledged the need for playing time after his outing with Coachella Valley.
“I love playing the game of basketball,” the 2024 second round pick said. “To be able to come down here and actually produce is actually good for me and good for my spirit. Whenever I’m called down here or whatever, I’m all open to coming down here… It’s good to be in a new environment.”
