Bronny James is in his second NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers, and his role has largely mirrored what he experienced as a rookie. Through 29 appearances this year, James has averaged 2.2 points, 1.2 assists and 0.5 rebounds in limited minutes while shooting 40 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from three-point range. His opportunities have primarily come in short bursts, often late in games or when the rotation has been stretched.

That pattern is not much different from his first year after being selected 55th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft. As a rookie, James split time between the Lakers and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, focusing on development while adjusting to the speed and physicality of the pro level.

Like last season, James has continued to move between the NBA and G League rosters. He has taken on a larger role in South Bay, handling more on-ball responsibilities and logging extended minutes to accelerate his growth. However, that has also meant stretches away from the Lakers’ active lineup.

James has been absent from the Lakers for five straight games after being assigned to the G League, including Saturday’s win over the Golden State Warriors. On Sunday, the Lakers announced that James has been recalled as the team prepares to face the Sacramento Kings on the second night of a back-to-back.

While his overall numbers remain modest, James has delivered a few encouraging performances this season and has shown improved decision-making as a secondary ball handler. The Lakers view him as a developmental guard who can provide backcourt depth, especially during congested stretches of the schedule.

Los Angeles enters Sunday’s matchup with a 35-24 record, sitting sixth in the Western Conference with 23 games remaining. With the playoff race tightening, depth will be critical. James will have another opportunity to suit up when the Lakers welcome the Kings, as he looks to carve out a more consistent role while continuing his long-term development.
