Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves knows injuries test more than just the body. This season, Reaves was on track for the best campaign of his career. He averaged a career-high 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists on 49/36/87.1 shooting splits in 51 games.

He ranked second on the team in scoring, behind superstar Luka Doncic. Then, April 2 changed everything.

Reaves suffered a Grade 2 left oblique strain against the Oklahoma City Thunder and has not played since. He has remained present, supporting his teammates through their first-round playoff run against the Houston Rockets

Los Angeles leads the series 3-1. Reaves has admitted that the time away carries a weight beyond the physical.

Reaves has been a consummate professional throughout his rehabilitation. He has done everything in his power to return to the court as quickly as possible.

The 27-year-old’s presence on the bench has been a stabilizing force for L.A. The Lakers are one win away from advancing to the second round, where they would meet defending champions Thunder.

Reaves spoke to reporters and delivered a candid admission about the toll of the recovery process. For him, the real battle has been mental.

"It's been pretty miserable," Reaves said, per Dave McMenamin on X. "Just not having somewhat of a control on the game. Just sitting over there with no hope in the game, but no hope that I can affect the game."

He is approaching his return methodically, refusing to rush the process despite the postseason urgency.

"Obviously, I can talk and try to lead from being over there, but not really being on the court. It sucks," he continued. "I think we've seen in the past when I get injured, I'll do everything I can to get back as soon as I can with still being safe at the same time."

Reaves is officially listed as questionable for Game 5 against the Rockets at Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday. Whether he suits up or not, his commitment to this team has never wavered.
