The Los Angeles Lakers are optimistic that superstar guard Luka Doncic will sign an extension soon, thanks in part to the front office checking off his offseason wish list.

As noted by Dan Woike of The Athletic, Doncic has taken an active role in the Lakers’ summer plans. While he cannot officially sign an extension until August 2 due to NBA rules, there’s growing belief that a long-term deal will get done before training camp.

Doncic Leading the Way

The All-NBA guard was acquired from the Mavericks on February 1 in the trade involving Anthony Davis, and since then, Doncic has made his intentions clear. He reportedly told team officials he wanted a rim-running center, more shooting and help on the defensive end.

The Lakers answered by signing free agents Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia, with veteran guard Marcus Smart expected to join them once he clears waivers following a buyout with the Wizards.

According to Woike, Doncic personally reached out to both Ayton and Smart to help convince them to come to Los Angeles.

Eyes on Championships

The Lakers also released an interview Saturday where Doncic said he wants to be remembered as “the guy that brought championships to the city.” It’s another signal that he’s all-in on Los Angeles and that a contract extension is on the horizon.

For now, the Lakers seem confident. Doncic is engaged, the roster is improving, and the front office believes the franchise is positioned to contend in the West.
