The Los Angeles Lakers' seven-game winning streak is over after they fell to the Phoenix Suns during their showdown at Crypto.com Arena on Monday night.
Despite star guard Devin Booker leaving early due to a groin injury, the Suns dominated and led by as many as 25 points before settling for a 125-108 victory. Dillon Brooks led the way for Phoenix, scoring 33 points on 15-of-26 shooting.
Collin Gillespie had a career night with 28 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals. He had 16 points in the fourth quarter to help prevent the Lakers from having any hope for a comeback.
Luka Doncic had 38 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, but he also had nine turnovers. No other Laker scored more than 20 points.
After the game, Lakers head coach JJ Redick said he was not sure if his players had a "brain fog," but he emphasized that they didn't execute their game plan. He specifically mentioned his team playing too far off of shooters.
"It's like the Monstars took over the people you've grown to coach. It’s weird," Redick admitted, per Jovan Buha of Buha's Block.
The confusing "Monstars" comparison aside, it's hard to blame Redick for feeling confused about what just happened to the Lakers.
After all, they had been an unstoppable force offensively during their recent winning streak, averaging 126 points as a team. They were also able to limit their opponents to below 113 points during that stretch, including the Milwaukee Bucks who scored just 95 points against them.
Perhaps playing three games in four nights had taken its toll on the Purple and Gold. Regardless, L.A. has a chance to bounce back when they play the Toronto Raptors on Thursday.
The Lakers still sit at second in the Western Conference with a 15-5 record.
