The Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the most active teams in the NBA offseason.
General manager Rob Pelinka traded for Walker Kessler and added Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Collin Sexton.
Now, they're setting their sights on Jonathan Kuminga, a move that has drawn mixed reviews.
Notably, that included some skepticism from ESPN insider Brian Windhorst, who doesn't think the 23-year-old should get a big payday this offseason.
“But I just want to point out about Kuminga…two teams in the last year have moved on from him, and you did not see any team go commit any significant resources to get him,” Windhorst said on his 'Windy Wednesdays' segment on ESPN LA’s "Sedano & Kap."
Windhorst acknowledged that Kuminga would give the Lakers some much-needed athleticism. Nevertheless, he doesn't know whether he should get top dollar, as his camp is probably pushing for.
“You feel better having Kuminga at a couple million a year as opposed to having him at $25 million a year,” Windhorst said. “That changes everything.”
Kuminga has shown flashes, and as a former No. 7 pick with two-way upside, it's easy to understand why a team like the Lakers would be tempted to make a run at him.
Then again, he burned bridges with the team that drafted him and openly questioned his coach multiple times. Then, when he was finally cut loose and given a chance to prove himself, he didn't do much to help his case.
Per Basketball Reference, he averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game on 46.3 percent from the floor with 36 games with the Hawks. That's not worth $25 million a year.
