Lakers left short-handed after rescinding Mark Williams trade

The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly rescinded their trade offer for Mark Williams. According to ESPN's Shams Charania , the Lakers medical staff found "multiple issues" that led him to fail his medical examination with the franchise. As such, Williams will now remain with the Charlotte Hornets. Therefore, Dalton Knecht, among others, will stay with JJ Redick's team.

Rescinding trades is highly uncommon in the NBA. However, teams do have the right to cancel a trade if there are legitimate concerns. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the trade deadline has now passed and they have a full 15-man roster. As such, they're unable to find a replacement big man on the trade or free agent market.

"Sources tell me that the Lakers have failed Mark Williams on his physical exam," Charania said. "...It's about the extent of the injury, of what they've got and what they've found. In that exam, clearly they've found some issues. People have spoken about his back being an issue, but I'm told that was not the reason of the failed physical. They found a couple of other issues in his physical exam, which they did not expect."

Jaxson Hayes is the only healthy center on the Lakers roster right now. Christian Wood is still under contract, but is yet to play this season as he recovers from surgery. As such, Redick's team will be forced to move forward with a smaller lineup than desired. Rob Pelinka sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks as part of the deal that brought Luka Doncic to Los Angeles.

While the Lakers are still talented enough to contend for a deep playoff run, their lack of talent at center will likely hinder their hopes of competing for a championship this season. Even if they could acquire a free agent big man, they're unlikely to make a big enough impact to move the needle.

Acquiring Doncic was always a move aimed at the future. He is going to be the face of the Lakers organization for at least the next decade. Unfortunately for Pelinka and Co., his first few months with the franchise are unlikely to end in silverware. Still, rescinding the trade offer for Williams was the right call. The Lakers need to be smart about who they're acquiring, even if those decisions hurt during the short term.

It appears the Lakers are moving forward with a renewed sense of clarity. It won't be long until they're a dominant force in the Western Conference once more.
