The Los Angeles Lakers have been working on getting Luka Doncic signed to a contract extension every since they made a trade for him just a couple of weeks prior to the trade deadline.

Adding Doncic to the roster means that they want him to be the face of the franchise for years to come. Once LeBron James retires, they want Doncic to be the guy who carries the team.

Doncic and Los Angeles have been negotiating a deal with everyone else around the league expecting a deal to get done sooner rather than later.

According to Martin Pavcnik of Sportklub, Doncic has agreed to a massive four-year deal worth $229 million. This would mean that Doncic is locked up for years to come.

The agreement cannot be made official until August 2, so the Lakers and the NBA will not officially announce the transaction until then. This has not been confirmed by any other sources at this point.

If this rumor is true, then the Lakers have their superstar point guard locked down as he enters his prime. They can officially start building the team around him.

The Lakers have already started making roster decisions based on their assumption that they will have Doncic on the roster long-term, including signing Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart.

As James enters the final years of his career, the Lakers need another superstar whom they can build the future around. That’s the entire reason why they traded Anthony Davis for Doncic.

James’ money will fall off the books in a couple of years, so the Lakers will only have to pay both Doncic and James during this contract extension for one season.

That might be the only season in which the Lakers venture into the second apron of the luxury tax as they continue to chase a championship with James on the roster.

Doncic is one of the five best players in the world, so this extension is certainly warranted. Now it will be up to Rob Pelinka to build a contending team around him for the next four seasons.

Once Doncic was traded to the Lakers, he averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game. He shot 43.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
