Lakers, Mavericks discussing PJ Washington trade?

P.J. Washington has been linked to the Lakers for much of the offseason. Those links may be worth watching a little more closely.

Marc Jacobs of Lakers Film Studio reported that Los Angeles and the Mavericks have held “advanced discussions” involving Washington. Jacobs added that nothing is imminent.

The report should be treated as a rumor for now. NBA insider Jake Fischer previously said he had no indication the teams had held meaningful trade talks involving Washington or Daniel Gafford.

Still, the basketball fit makes sense.

Washington played alongside Luka Doncic in Dallas and would give L.A. another versatile forward who can defend multiple positions and contribute offensively without dominating the ball.

The Athletic’s Jovan Buha has also discussed Washington as a possible Lakers target, though he was outlining potential trade constructions rather than reporting active negotiations.

Buha noted that L.A. would have to navigate the first apron and likely send out at least two contracts. Jaden Hardy and Jake LaRavia could make the salary math work, though Dallas would presumably demand significant draft compensation. Jarred Vanderbilt could also be used in a legal framework.

One potential obstacle is Washington’s contract. He is owed a fully guaranteed $88.8 million over the next four seasons, a commitment the Lakers reportedly haven’t found appealing.

So, are the Lakers and Mavericks talking? One report says they have advanced discussions. Others have suggested nothing substantial has taken place.

So, yes, it’s still just a rumor. But it’s one that makes enough sense to monitor.
