Zach Guthrie is receiving a promotion, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who reports (via Twitter) that Guthrie will be an assistant coach on JJ Redick‘s staff with the Lakers.

Guthrie, who has been the top coach of Los Angeles’ G League affiliate over the past two seasons, will also be the Lakers’ new head of player development, Charania adds.

Guthrie led the South Bay Lakers to a 26-10 regular season record in 2025/26 and the team entered the playoffs as the top seed in the NBAGL’s Western Conference before falling to the Stockton Kings in the conference finals. The Lakers’ G League club is relocating and will be called the Coachella Valley Lakers in ’26/27.

A Texas native who spent three seasons as a Wizards assistant before being hired by the Lakers, Guthrie has also spent time with the Mavericks, Jazz, Magic and Spurs organizations.

The Lakers have significantly reshaped their roster this summer, bringing in younger veterans like Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes and Sandro Mamukelashvili while adding Cameron Carr with the 24th overall pick in last month’s draft. Guthrie will be tasked with helping each player on the roster maximize his potential.
