With NBA free agency set to begin on June 30, uncertainty continues to surround the future of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James. Early discussions between James’ camp and the Lakers have not resulted in any commitment regarding a return for the 2026-27 season, according to ESPN insider Ramona Shelburne.
“L.A. is the first team he can talk to because he’s their own free agent,” Shelburne said Sunday speaking on SportsCenter. “And my understanding is they had initial conversations with LeBron James’ representative, but he has not even fully committed to returning next year in these conversations. The conversations were described to me as, ‘We’re keeping in touch.’ OK? So, there’s no commitment to even returning or salary figures being discussed. I think that’s been interpreted as something like, ‘LeBron is still assessing his options.’ Whether that is retirement or whether that is other teams. And if there are other teams that he’s looking at, what does that money look like?”
The four-time NBA champion earned $52.6 million during the 2025-26 season. However, Los Angeles may prefer a reduced salary figure to create greater roster flexibility as the franchise continues building around star guard Luka Doncic. Shelburne suggested that a potential pay cut could become a sticking point.
“Somebody cautioned me,” she said. “I think one of the biggest ways you can frame this if he’s back in L.A., he spoke at the end about, there’s a story that Dave McMenamin wrote about how he doesn’t feel respected necessarily for some of the sacrifices he made as the ‘third player’ here in L.A. behind Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic, how would he swallow any kind of pay cut? Even if it’s more than any other team could give him. Even if it’s $30M, well, that’s still $22M less than he made last year, and I think that’s really what they’re trying to weigh.”
James agent Rich Paul has indicated the 41-year-old would only consider a pay cut if the Lakers could present a clear championship roadmap showing how that sacrifice would improve the team’s title chances.
Despite his age, James remains highly productive. Across 70 games this past season, including playoff appearances, he averaged 21.3 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.2 rebounds.
Because of his sustained production, James is expected to draw considerable interest on the open market, with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio Spurs, and Washington Wizards among the teams likely to pursue him.
For now, the Lakers and James remain in contact, but with free agency approaching, his future remains undecided.
