LaMelo Ball is not unfamiliar with controversy. Suiting up for the Charlotte Hornets this season, the 24-year-old had a concerning play against Bam Adebayo. Thankfully, while the Hornets’ star escaped without any major consequences, a recent update has found the NBA star in deep waters.

A lawsuit filed in May 2024 accused LaMelo Ball of injuring a child with his car. According to WCNC Charlotte reports, the former Rookie of the Year is now facing a $3.75 million lawsuit, set to go to trial in mid-June. The reports also stated that the child suffered some serious injuries, and the plaintiff, too, had to experience financial and emotional difficulties.

Interestingly, the NBA star has not accepted the charges. Denying the allegations right from the beginning, the 2022 NBA All-Star has no other option than to stand before the judge. As the trial falls in the week of June 15, Ball’s legal team has urged the judges to divide the trial into two.

This would make it easier to find out whether the California native was indeed guilty. And if he were found guilty, the next phase would discuss the amount of compensation the NBA superstar would have to pay for his actions. Meanwhile, having a documented history of breaking the road rules, the situation might turn somber for the Hornets star.

What Actually Happened at the Purple and Teal Day With LaMelo Ball?

The incident took place on October 7, 2023, at the Spectrum Center. As fans attended the free ‘Purple and Teal Day’ event, the mother and the son went near Ball’s car when he stopped at a red light. Unfortunately, as soon as the signal turned green, Ball did not wait for his fans and sped away from the scene.

It was at this moment that the child allegedly incurred the injury. Initially, the child’s mother sought a total of $50,000 from Ball. But, according to The Charlotte Observer, the plaintiff later amended the amount to $3.75 million.

Now then, Ball was already involved in a car crash earlier this month. And such a history might go against him during the trial. Thus, as things turn interesting, fans cannot wait to see what’s next.
