Latest on Kenny Atkinson, Cavs rumors

The Cavaliers aren’t happy with where they are. But they’re also not panicking.

Despite an uneven start that has already produced nearly as many losses as last season, coach Kenny Atkinson is not on the hot seat, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic.

That runs counter to recent chatter suggesting Atkinson’s footing was becoming less stable, including reports of “rumbles in coaching circles” and internal questions about leadership. Vardon reported that while frustration exists, sources maintain Atkinson’s job is not in jeopardy.

The same goes for the roster, at least for now.

Vardon noted the front office wants a clearer picture of what the Cavs look like at full strength before making any significant decisions. That hasn’t happened yet. Max Strus has been sidelined since August following foot surgery, and several others have missed time as well.

None of this means there’s satisfaction inside the organization. Executives, coaches and players are described as upset by the recent play. But patience still appears to be winning out.

According to Vardon, Cleveland has declined at least two recent trade offers involving rotation players. That alone suggests the Cavaliers are still in evaluation mode, not reaction mode.

In other words, Atkinson is staying put. And so is the plan.
