LeBron James and Steve Nash discussed an intriguing change in the NBA's award system. In recent years, the league has added new awards to the roster, including the Clutch Player of the Year and the Hustle Award. The major accolades, such as the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year award, spark debate among fans every year.
James thinks the NFL has a good way to celebrate and reward players, considering they have trophies for players on both offense and defense, which are also given depending on your experience in the league (rookies also receive separate awards).
The 2025 MVP race between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic was one of the most entertaining in recent years. It took until after their respective teams clashed in the second round of the playoffs for the league to announce the Canadian guard had won his first Michael Jordan trophy.
During Tuesday's episode of their "Mind The Game" podcast, James told Nash the NFL has an interesting award system, which he thinks the NBA could adopt.
"I did think about how the NFL does Offensive Player of the Year and MVP," James said. "I thought that could be possibly something in our league, where you give an Offensive Player of the Year and an MVP. Not saying we should do it, but it was something that was pretty cool. In the NFL, how they do that. They do the Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, MVP."
Then, Nash agreed with James, saying that the best defender receives an honor at the end of the regular season, but there isn't such a thing for offensive players.
"We have defense and MVP, we don't have offense," Nash said. "Also, because there's no real criteria about MVP. It's a statement: 'Most Valuable Player.' But what is the criteria? Because, we usually associate it in some capacity with team success, which is a good thing. ...It is sort of this nebulous kind of thing we don't exactly know, but there's a narrative sometimes or there's a popular opinion. Maybe that's just the way it should be."
Jokic is considered the best offensive player in the league, as well as Luka Doncic, Jalen Brunson, Steph Curry and other players who aren't known for their defensive abilities.
Adding a new award focused solely on the impact on offense could make things more interesting in the association.
