The Los Angeles Lakers fell short in their recent NBA Cup knockout game against the San Antonio Spurs.
Even with Victor Wembanyama sidelined, the Spurs took control early and never let up. Their lead ballooned to 23 points by halftime, and they kept their foot on the gas from there.
The loss dropped LA to fourth place in the Western Conference standings with a 17-7 record, while San Antonio improved to 16-11. After the game, LeBron James broke down what went wrong for the Lakers.
One of the biggest problems for the Lakers in that loss was their perimeter defence. They struggled to keep the Spurs out of the paint, and it became a recurring issue throughout the night.
After the game, LeBron talked about what needs to change for LA to tighten up on that end of the floor.
“Obviously, you can’t do it individually; it has to be five guys on a string. Communication, always at an all-time high, letting you know what’s going on behind you and things of that nature,” James said.
He pointed out that not everyone is built the same way defensively. Some guys are better suited to use their strength while others rely on quickness, so it’s about understanding who you are and how best to play your matchup.
The 13-point defeat to the Spurs was another clear example of the Lakers’ defensive issues this season.
While they’ve managed to put together a decent record, their play on the court tells a different story. Against teams with playoff potential, they’ve been far less convincing.
This isn’t new – similar problems were on display against the Suns, and the Spurs just made them even harder to ignore.
On a more positive note, there’s still plenty of basketball left, giving head coach JJ Redick some valuable time to address what’s become an increasingly obvious problem.
