Perhaps the biggest recurring storyline heading into the NBA season is the future of Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James.
The 21-time All-Star will be 41 years old in December, and while he is still playing at an extremely high level, everyone knows he will be walking away soon.
He has done everything there is to accomplish in the league, but he has consistently reiterated that he still wants to compete for championships.
The Lakers held their team media day on Monday and James was questioned on when he would be calling it quits.
He didn’t have a definitive answer, but told reporters, “I don’t know when the end is, but I know it’s a lot sooner than later.”

He dropped a few more gems later in his media session when he told reporters that his teammates will have no bearing on when he decides to retire.
James said that it is a decision he will make after lengthy, detailed discussions with his wife, Savannah James, and his daughter.
The choice is so sacred that he even said his youngest son, Bryce James, won’t have an impact on his choice and he won’t be waiting to play alongside him like he did with Bronny James.
In a cross-sports reference — this sounds a lot like NFL legend Tom Brady, who knew his time was coming to an end but just couldn’t part with his love for the game.
The four-time champion has every reason to retire, but he chooses to remain faithful to the grind of a season each year. He is partnered with Luka Doncic on the Lakers and both have aligned their visions for a championship.
They won’t have much more time together, but they have a great chance to win a title with such a dynamic pairing. Both James and Doncic are among the best passers in the league and are great rebounders.
They score in completely different ways, but they are both versatile in that area, so they really have no weaknesses. James and the team both know he is on his way out the door, but that won’t affect his expectations while he is still playing.
