LeBron James makes final, stunning free-agency decision

Despite what many said and wrote about the situation, it turns out that superstar LeBron James decided he could not go home again.

On Friday morning, NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN revealed that James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8M deal with a player option. Almost immediately after Charania dropped this bombshell, James took to social media to explain his decision. 

"I thought I was done when the season ended," James wrote. "I wasn't ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game. I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game. I still truly love this game, and I have more to give. The last few weeks have really been special. I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think. I’ve had an incredible few months with all the people I love, trying to figure it all out. This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win, and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship." 

For weeks, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat were seen by many as the favorites to ultimately win the James sweepstakes. The future Hall of Famer earned the first two of his four career NBA championship rings with the Heat from 2010-14. Meanwhile, the Akron native previously completed two stints with Cleveland. 

"I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team, and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time," James added in his posts. "Thank you LA. Miami, I’ll forever love, and Northeast Ohio will always home!" 

LeBron James now part of a new star-studded group

The 76ers made a major splash earlier this offseason when they acquired 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics. Along with big man Joel Embiid and guard Tyrese Maxey, James is part of another advertised star-studded group. 

Additionally, the Sixers may not be done, as James allegedly could want his new employer to try to acquire Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and/or Anthony Davis of the Washington Wizards. James and Irving helped the Cavaliers win the NBA title back in the spring of 2016. Later, James and Davis were part of the Los Angeles Lakers side that won the 2020 NBA Finals. 

Perhaps James' move has at least something to do with his legacy. 

"James will hope to break a 43-year championship drought for the 76ers, much the same way he erased a 52-year streak without a title for the city of Cleveland when he won a championship with the Cavaliers in 2016," ESPN's Dave McMenamin noted.
