LeBron James added another unusual chapter to his legendary NBA career on Sunday night, starting at center for the Philadelphia 76ers in their matchup against the Detroit Pistons. With Joel Embiid unavailable, Philadelphia head coach Nick Nurse turned to the 41 year old superstar to fill the middle of the starting lineup.
James has spent most of his career playing on the wing and handling the ball as a forward or point guard. However, his versatility has allowed him to take on different roles throughout his 24 seasons in the league. His latest assignment showed that even this late in his career, he remains willing to do whatever his team needs.
Although James previously started at center for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021, seeing him return to the position was still a notable development.
Philadelphia entered the game without Embiid, leaving the team searching for answers in the frontcourt. Rather than completely reshuffling the lineup, Nurse opted to use James in the middle.
James joined Tyrese Maxey, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Jaylen Brown and Dean Wade in the starting five. The lineup gave the 76ers plenty of scoring ability and playmaking, but it also presented questions about rebounding and defending bigger opponents.
At 6-foot-9, James has the strength and basketball intelligence to compete around the basket. However, playing center requires different responsibilities, including battling for rebounds, protecting the paint and defending opposing big men.
The smaller lineup also offered Philadelphia an opportunity to create more space offensively. With James capable of initiating the offense and making plays for teammates, the 76ers hoped to make up for their lack of traditional size with speed and versatility.
The experiment did not produce the result Philadelphia wanted. Detroit defeated the 76ers 106-93, handing Philadelphia its first loss of the season.
James finished with 18 points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes. Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 29 points, but the 76ers struggled to generate consistent offense against Detroit’s defense.
The defeat highlighted the challenge of playing without a traditional center. Philadelphia will need to determine how frequently James can fill that role while maintaining its defensive presence and rebounding.
Still, James’ latest assignment demonstrated his adaptability. Few players have been asked to do as much across different positions, and his willingness to take on another responsibility remains remarkable this late in his career.
