LeBron James’ move to Philadelphia was supposed to give the 76ers another superstar capable of helping them compete for an NBA championship. However, just days into the 2026-27 season, the experiment is already facing an unexpected challenge.
Philadelphia has started the season with plenty of excitement surrounding its new roster, but injuries and frontcourt concerns are creating questions about how the team will manage its rotation. Most notably, James has already been forced into a role that he never expected to play regularly at this stage of his career.
During Philadelphia’s matchup against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, James started at center because Joel Embiid and several other frontcourt options were unavailable. The 41-year-old finished with 18 points and five assists, but the 76ers suffered a 106-93 defeat.
The loss exposed Philadelphia’s problems on the boards. Detroit outrebounded the 76ers 54-37 and scored 24 second chance points, demonstrating how difficult it can be for the team to replace its traditional big men.
James has the versatility to play multiple positions, but he made it clear that becoming a full-time center is not part of his plans.
“We got an MVP over there,” James said, referring to Embiid. He explained that playing center could be an option when necessary, but he does not expect it to become a permanent responsibility.
That creates an important challenge for head coach Nick Nurse. Philadelphia needs to keep its roster healthy while finding reliable minutes behind Embiid.
The 76ers still have plenty of talent. James joins a group featuring Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and promising young guard VJ Edgecombe, giving Philadelphia multiple options offensively.
However, having star power does not automatically solve every problem. The team must establish chemistry, find a dependable backup center and determine how to distribute responsibilities without putting unnecessary physical demands on James.
The early season remains young, so there is no reason to panic just yet. Still, Philadelphia’s championship hopes could depend on how quickly it addresses these issues.
James has spent more than two decades adapting his game to different situations. Now, the biggest question is whether Philadelphia can build the right system around him before its early problems become a season-long concern.
