LeBron James may be feeling emotional after sharing the court with his son, Bronny, in a playoff game, but the question about his future remains the same: Will he play another year?
Twenty-three years in, there’s no doubt that LeBron is nearing retirement. Other than chasing another championship, he has accomplished everything he dreamed of on a basketball court. He’s the league’s all-time scorer. He’s mostly regarded as one of the greatest who ever played the game. But at 41, is he willing to put a strain on his body to play for another season?
According to a new report, there’s a chance he’ll retire if LA is sent to fishing early, should they fall to the Houston Rockets.
“In an appearance at last week’s Semafor World Economy gathering, Maverick Carter said that changes in the tech and media landscape allowed James some flexibility in terms of his next moves once he retires — which could be as soon as later this month, if the Lakers fall to the Houston Rockets in the first round of the NBA playoffs, or after next season,” per a report.
If that’s the case, this might be the last playoff run for LeBron James. Hard to imagine, right? He’s still playing exceptionally well for the Lakers sans Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
While LeBron has said – at least through his PR team – that he doesn’t plan on having a retirement tour, it’s hard to envision him not going out with a bang. And the money the league will generate, should that tour happen, will be massive. Even Adam Silver is convinced that James will play for one more year, according to a recent interview.
“You know, I want LeBron [James] to play as long as he actually wants to play. I mean, he’s not just a 41-year-old player in the league with the most points ever in so many different categories, but he’s still playing at an incredibly high level. It’s not like he’s just sort of out there. I have every indication that he plans to keep playing next season.” Silver said on WFAN Sports Radio.
Silver’s statement could be a game-changer about LeBron’s future. If the commissioner wants you to play for one more year, then it’s time for James’ team to discuss the pros and cons of it.
