Fans of “Inside the NBA” might shed a tear this afternoon. It’s just been confirmed that Ernie Johnson is moving on from the beloved studio show.
Johnson, a six-time Sports Emmy Award winner, announced this Wednesday that he’s leaving “Inside the NBA” after the 2026-27 season. The Hall of Fame broadcaster thanked Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith in a heartfelt video that was posted on social media.
“This will be my last season. Totally my decision. It’s just time. It’s been an honor to spend so many nights – decades, actually – at the desk with my brothers, Kenny, Charles and Shaq. I so appreciate the leadership at TNT and ESPN for allowing the show to continue. So why now? I’ve always prided myself on my preparation, the hours I put in every day getting ready for the next show. I’ve always loved that part of my job, but I vowed that if that ever became a challenge more than it is a joy, I’d know it’s time to step away. After 37 seasons, it’s time.”
Johnson made it clear that he’s not being forced to step away for medical reasons, but he wants to “slow down” due to heart issues.
“For nearly two years, I’ve dealt with heart issues. I’m still trying to get this thing to beat exactly the way it should.”
Even though Johnson is leaving “Inside the NBA” after this season, he’ll still cover March Madness and other events.
“I’ll still do March Madness and other projects for TNT and CBS, and I’ve just started a new production company called 32 Bowties geared toward telling feel-good stories in sports. So this is by no means the end. It’s just a turning of the page.”
Johnson joined Turner Sports in 1989 and quickly became an irreplaceable voice for the network.
We’re certainly wishing Johnson all the best as he enters the next chapter of his life.
