The Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to make significant improvements in the 2025 offseason. They want to close the gap between them and the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team that beat them in the Western Conference Finals.
The Timberwolves have been in the news as a potential suitor for Kevin Durant. That won't be the only move they are aiming to do because they are reportedly interested in Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball.
During the series against the Thunder, it was evident that the Timberwolves had trouble with their point guard play. Mike Conley Jr. is a respected veteran, but his age has become an issue for the team. He can't keep up with younger guards like the ones in Oklahoma City.
The Timberwolves recognize they need a point guard, which could involve a potential trade for Ball. He is a fantastic point guard despite the injuries he suffered throughout his career. Ball fits the Timberwolves' system, especially if he can still reach his full potential.
The Timberwolves want a point guard who can facilitate the system and also defend at a high level. Lonzo Ball is the perfect player for Chris Finch's system, especially if he stays healthy enough to help them in the Playoffs.
Anthony Edwards is the team's superstar, but he is always the opponent's focus. If there is a player like Ball who could relieve Edwards of the pressure, the Timberwolves will be tougher to defend.

Ball has also improved as an off-ball shooter, averaging 38.9% in his two campaigns with the Bulls. That is a marked improvement from shooting around 30% in his first few seasons. Ball's playmaking, defense, and shooting could be the key for the Timberwolves to compete in the Western Conference.
They are playing against teams with elite guards. Edwards is already on that level, and having a backcourt partner with so much potential like Edwards could help them get over the hump.
Ball is entering the first year of his two-year contract extension with the Bulls. He is set to make $10 million in the 2025-26 season, which could be a steal for any team that wants him. Ball could stay in Chicago, but the Timberwolves could easily pull off a trade.
Since he is only on a two-year deal, he could be the perfect transition or bridge between the older Conley and the youngster Rob Dillingham. The Timberwolves can gradually develop Dillingham while Ball takes the reins as the team's top point guard.

Of course, Ball is still reeling from the injuries he suffered. That could mean limited minutes for him from time to time, which Dillingham could take advantage of. This would be a great decision from the Timberwolves if they want an upgrade and a path towards the future.
