Loyola Chicago is mourning the loss of one of the greatest players in program history.
Alfredrick Hughes, a former All-American and the school’s all-time leading scorer, has died at the age of 63, the university announced.
Hughes played for the Ramblers from 1981-85 and earned Associated Press All-America honors in 1985. He was a three-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and helped lead Loyola to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 as a senior.
He remains the program’s career scoring leader with 2,914 points, which ranks 11th in NCAA history. Hughes also holds school records in field goals made and attempted and ranks among the top players in rebounds and steals.
Loyola athletic director Steve Watson said Hughes’ impact extended well beyond his playing career.
“Not only was Alfredrick an all-time great on one of the best Loyola teams in program history, but he was a great guy who continued to support the Ramblers long after his playing days,” Watson said.
Former teammate Carl Golston called Hughes “my brother for over 45 years,” while current coach Drew Valentine described him as “a true Loyola legend.”
Hughes was selected in the first round of the 1985 NBA Draft by the Spurs and played one season in the league.
His No. 21 jersey is retired by Loyola, and he is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame.
