The Luka Doncic era officially got underway on Wednesday night as the Los Angeles Lakers picked up a dominant victory over the Golden State Warriors to kick off the regular season. But well before things tipped off, Doncic was getting some attention for his actions off the court as he continued to endear himself to Lakers fans.
Doncic took out an ad in the L.A. Times, sending a message to the fans promising that this team will give them everything they have every night. Additionally, Doncic paid for the parking of several fans in attendance on Opening Night and the Lakers superstar spoke about the importance of having the support of the fanbase and needing to have that connection.
“We want the support from fans, I know they work hard, to get to the games, to get to the arena so I always have something in me that, I need to have that connection with the fans,” Doncic said. “So, just trying to welcome them to the new season and, that they know that we really appreciate their support.”
There has been a lot said about Doncic being the leader of this team and face of the franchise and it is clearly something that he takes seriously. Not just on the court, but off of it as well.
“Obviously the Lakers, is one of the biggest organizations in the world, if not the biggest,” Doncic added. “It’s a lot of honor just to be the face of the franchise and I hope I can stay here long, and it doesn’t feel, not different but like I said, it’s very much [an] honor and just enjoy this moment.”
Doncic and the Lakers gave the fans plenty to cheer about in this first contest. He led the Lakers with 28 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals in the win. And after ending last season on the bench due to injury, he was happy to be on the court for games that count.
“Yeah, I couldn’t wait for this day to come. Obviously, preseason is different thing. You play games, but obviously when the regular season starts, it’s a lot of fun. And I’m just happy to be back on court playing.”
The Lakers are a franchise unlike almost any other around the world and Doncic is the person leading the charge. And he is on his way to becoming the latest beloved superstar to don the purple and gold, especially if he can bring this franchise another championship.
One of the big stories of the first game was Doncic going back-and-forth with Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg in the first half. While Doncic brushed it off and insists he isn’t trying to talk too much in order to avoid technical fouls, Lendeborg says he lost all respect for the Lakers superstar.
