The Los Angeles Lakers picked up a 130-120 win over the Miami Heat last night, improving their record to 5-2 on the season. This has been a great start for the Lakers, who have been without LeBron James and have had Luka Doncic for only four of their seven games so far this season. Austin Reaves has been an indelible piece while the supporting cast is excelling under head coach JJ Redick.
Doncic has averaged 41.3 points, 11.5 rebounds and 8.3 assists this season, putting up his first triple-double (29 PTS, 11 REB, 10 AST) of the season in the win over the Heat.
Meanwhile, Reaves has averaged 31.1 points, 9.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds but had a rough scoring night with 24 points on 9-22 FG, the same as Doncic. They combined to shoot 18-44 from the field, but important contributions from Jake LaRavia (25 PTS) and Jaxson Hayes (15 PTS) ensured they pulled through.
Doncic had to acknowledge his supporting cast and the troubles he and Reaves faced offensively in this win during his post-game interview with Spectrum SportsNet.
"It's been great. I think both of us have played great games, but not today. We both played terrible today, we couldn't make a shot. But everybody stepped up, we shared the ball pretty much, and that's how we got the win."

Even though Doncic and Reaves weren't at their best, they were still good enough to help lead this shorthanded Lakers squad to an impressive win. Even with LeBron James yet to make his season debut, the Lakers look like a playoff-caliber team through the first two weeks of the NBA season.
Doncic and Reaves are building a strong rapport with each other, as evidenced by Reaves' banter about Doncic after the game.
"He's an idiot... He was in a really good mood today, joking around, having a good time... It's just, human nature when things like last year happen. Nobody ever thought that was going to happen. I'm sure he was in a state of shock, having to move and move his family. Now he's getting comfortable, having a good time. He acts like a kid, he needs to grow up at some point."

This backcourt pairing could lead the Lakers far this season, especially with an All-NBA caliber player like LeBron yet to play. The team currently occupies the No. 3 seed in the West and have a tricky schedule of games ahead.
They will participate in the second leg of a back-to-back against the Portland Trail Blazers tonight at 10 p.m. (ET). The Blazers have stormed out to a 4-2 record this season, even after head coach Chauncey Billups was placed on forced leave for his involvement in the NBA gambling scandal.
A matchup against Victor Wembanyama's San Antonio Spurs (5-1) is scheduled for November 5, followed by two games against sub-.500 franchises like the Atlanta Hawks (3-4) and Charlotte Hornets (3-4). This is before facing the currently undefeated reigning champions OKC Thunder (7-0) on November 12 and the currently winless New Orleans Pelicans (0-6) on November 14.
With James expected to return from his sciatica injury mid-November, Doncic and Reaves will have to lead the franchise through a challenging schedule of six games, featuring two of the NBA's best, three scrappy and dangerous squads, and the Pelicans, who are amid a rough stretch.
If Doncic and Reaves can help the Lakers stay as a top-three franchise in the West through this stretch, it should be an exciting and competitive season ahead for the franchise once James returns.
