Slovenia’s struggles continued with another loss in their build-up to EuroBasket.

Following back-to-back defeats against Germany and another loss to Lithuania, Slovenia came out strong against Latvia, looking to finally get a win on the board.

Luka Doncic, back after missing three of four games, scored 15 points in the first quarter and finished the half with 26.

But by halftime, Kristaps Porzingis and Latvia had erased Slovenia’s early lead. Things then took a turn for the worse in the third quarter, when Doncic exited the game with a knee injury after a collision with a teammate, worrying Lakers fans.

Slovenian outlet Sportklub highlighted how Doncic behaved after the game, which ended in a 100-88 loss for Slovenia.

They reported: “Slovenia’s first star felt a sharp pain in his knee and did not step on the court until the end of the match.

“The good news is that he returned to the bench, which suggests that the injury is probably not serious.”

They also noted how emotional he was, adding: “The Ljubljana native did not hide his anger at the refereeing after the match.

“At the referee’s final whistle, he dealt with all three referees with some juicy curses, making it clear that he was not satisfied with their work.”

If it were a severe injury or something that could affect his season with Los Angeles Lakers, Doncic likely would have stayed off the bench and focused on treatment instead of returning to courtside.

Important fixtures on the horizon

Slovenia are set to face Great Britain in three days, though Doncic is likely to sit out as a precaution.

On August 21, Slovenia are due to play Serbia in a match that could see Doncic go up against NBA rival Nikola Jokic. Whether he will take part is now uncertain.

Slovenia open their EuroBasket campaign against Poland on 28 August.
