Luka Doncic’s Return Timeline Takes Concerning Turn With Latest Update

Luka Doncic is having a good time with his teammates sitting on the bench, but that’s not where the Los Angeles Lakers fans want him. While they are keeping a close eye on his return, the latest update suggests the wait may be longer than expected.

The superstar guard has been sidelined since early April with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, and while there was optimism following his trip to Europe for specialized treatment, progress has stalled.

According to Lakers radio voice John Ireland, the recovery is nowhere near the final stages.

“He’s not close… he’s not running yet,” Ireland said, casting doubt on any immediate return.

If this seems a basis update, that detail is significant. Running is typically one of the first major checkpoints in a player’s rehab process, and without it, a return to full basketball activity remains distant.

The next phases, on-court drills, contact work, and full practice, are still ahead. Additionally, the timing couldn’t be more critical. The Lakers are on the verge of a Western Conference semifinal matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, with Game 1 looming if they close out their first-round series.

So far, Los Angeles has managed without its primary playmaker, building a 3-0 lead over the Houston Rockets behind LeBron James and Austin Reaves. But the margin for error shrinks in the next round.

Even if the Lakers advance, expectations shift dramatically against a deeper and more balanced opponent. Without Luka Doncic, their offensive ceiling lowers, and the burden on secondary creators increases.

Is Luka Doncic Even Returning This Season?

While the Los Angeles Lakers are moving on to the second round of the playoffs, the biggest question surrounding the team has little to do with their opponent and everything to do with Luka Doncic’s availability.

The star guard has been sidelined for a long time now, while the team has advanced past the Houston Rockets, with clarity on his return remaining elusive.

According to Cassidy Hubbarth, there is still no defined timeline.

“There’s been no timeline… it’s a slow build towards a return, not an imminent one,” she reported during the broadcast, noting that the five-time All-Star has progressed to controlled on-court drills and shooting but has yet to participate in contact work or scrimmages.

Without advancing to one-on-one or full-speed practice, a return to game action is not close. Reports also indicate he remains at least a week or more away from the next stage of recovery.

The Lakers now face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, a significantly tougher challenge that typically demands a fully healthy roster. However, before the injury, Luka Doncic led the league in scoring at 33.5 points per game while adding 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists.

For now, the trajectory points toward patience rather than urgency. A return this season remains possible, but based on current progress, it is far from guaranteed.
