Luka Doncic’s Subtle Contract Hint With Lakers Sparks Big Reaction

It’s been a huge offseason for Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic, largely because of his dramatic physical transformation—one of the biggest storylines since the season ended just over a month ago.

Doncic is currently back in the United States for a few days to attend a Jordan Brand event before rejoining the Slovenian national team for the upcoming EuroBasket 2025. During his brief stay stateside, a major development regarding his future in L.A. could unfold in the coming days.

Beginning Aug. 2, the 26-year-old will be eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with the Lakers. If he chooses not to, he can agree a shorter extension or play out the final year of his current deal—a scenario that would be far from ideal for the Lakers’ front office.

On Wednesday, Doncic made his first talk show appearance on "The Today Show" and was asked about the potential extension. His response drew laughs, as players are prohibited from discussing contract negotiations before the official start date due to the NBA’s strict tampering rules.

"Big decision on Saturday... whether you sign that big contract extension [with the Lakers]. Any message for fans?" Doncic was asked.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Doncic responded. "I can't discuss anything yet."
