Magic’s Franz Wagner Expected to Undergo MRI on Ankle
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Magic forward Franz Wagner scored 10 points but was unable to finish Germany’s win over Japan in the World Cup opener after turning his ankle.

Now, it seems, Wagner will undergo an MRI to make sure it isn’t anything too serious.

German coach Gordie Herbert said the injury looks like a slight sprain, via Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel.

“We’ll know more after an MRI,” Herbert said.

Wagner also grabbed six rebounds and passed for five assists before rolling the ankle and exiting under his own power with about 5 minutes left. Germany won easily, 81-63.

Wagner will turn 22 on Sunday, when Germany will have what’s expected to be a much tougher matchup vs. Australia. His status seems to be in doubt for that one — and perhaps moving forward in the tournament. But the injury doesn’t appear to be something that would impact his availability for the start of Orlando’s training camp in early October.

Wagner averaged 18.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 80 games last season.
