After an intense match, Argentina overcame Colombia to win the Copa America this year. The victory prompted former NBA champion and San Antonio Spurs legend Manu Ginobili to express how hyped he was about his country’s big win.
In a bittersweet finale, Argentina claimed their third consecutive major title by defeating Colombia 1-0 in extra time at the 2024 Copa América in Miami. However, the match was marred by chaotic scenes outside the stadium and a tearful farewell for national team captain Lionel Messi.
The game was delayed by over an hour after thousands of fans without tickets attempted to forcibly enter the sold-out Hard Rock Stadium. Footage showed massive overcrowding and distressed spectators, setting the stage for a tumultuous evening.
On the pitch, Argentina’s victory was sealed by a late extra-time goal from substitute Lautaro Martínez, ending Colombia’s impressive 28-match unbeaten run. But the story of the night was the emotional exit of 37-year-old Messi, who was substituted in the second half with an ankle injury. The Argentine legend was visibly distraught on the bench, likely bidding goodbye to international soccer.
As the final whistle blew, a hobbling Messi embraced his teammates and coaches, lifting the trophy amidst the cheers of jubilant Argentine fans. The bittersweet triumph underscored the end of an era for the iconic forward, whose illustrious career with La Albiceleste came to a poignant close on a chaotic night in Miami.
After Argentina’s big win, various personalities reacted to the Copa America’s final match this year. Among those who gave their take was San Antonio Spurs icon and former NBA champion Manu Ginobli, as seen in a tweet he posted on his official X account.

Much like his home country, Ginobili is a decorated star in the NBA having won four championships with various Spurs stars. Some of these include power forward Tim Duncan, guard Tony Parker, and current Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard.
Similar to Ginobili, Messi will soon retire from playing football soon after accomplishing so much in the sport. Expect a lot of tributes to come forth when that happens, including from the Spurs icon himself.
