The Golden State Warriors are once again at a crossroads regarding Jonathan Kuminga’s future.

This past offseason, the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga engaged in a tug of war over the young star’s future with the franchise.

The two sides ultimately settled with Kuminga signing a two-year, $48.5 million deal with the Dubs. However, it seems head coach Steve Kerr still wants Kuminga out of the team.

After all, he didn’t play Kuminga and seemed pretty happy with his decision as the Warriors registered a blowout 123-91 win over the Bulls.

Marc Spears wants the Golden State Warriors to ‘free’ Jonathan Kuminga

This season, Kuminga is averaging 12.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game for the Dubs.

These aren’t eye-popping numbers by any means, but it’s decent considering Kuminga’s 25.6 minutes per game this season.

But after returning from an injury, Kuminga has once again lost his place in the team. Keeping that in mind, NBA expert Marc Spears wants the Dubs to ‘free’ Kuminga.

“Free JK. You could see it in his eyes. He’s trying to be professional. I mean, it’s still several weeks away before he’s eligible to be traded, and it just started off so well.

“He averaged 15 points and seven rebounds the first 12 games. Then he got hurt, and just like last season, after he came back from injury, just doesn’t mesh well with the Warriors,” Spears said.

Indeed, parting ways seems to be the best move forward. Otherwise, the Warriors are just ruining Kuminga’s development at this early stage in his NBA career.

Trading Jonathan Kuminga will only help Golden State Warriors, says Marc Spears

Spears then shared his take on how trading Kuminga will only benefit the Warriors, as they now have two excellent options.

“Kuminga is at a number of $24 million, where, you know, perhaps they could get a better player. Or they’re going to have to get a bigger-name player, probably than before, because of that number.

“So that will help the Warriors out,” Spears concluded.

Unfortunately, no trade talks can be held around Kuminga before January 15, 2026, as he’s ineligible to be traded until then.
