The Los Angeles Lakers struck big on the buyout market when they signed DeAndre Ayton and Marcus Smart.

The Los Angeles Lakers filled two of their biggest needs and brought in veteran players who can help contribute to winning a championship.

Marcus Smart will bring toughness, communication, defense and extra ball-handling.

Smart is on a two-year, $11 million deal with the Lakers which makes this a low risk, high reward move.

Marcus Smart says it doesn’t matter if he starts or comes off the bench

As the Lakers look to win a championship, one of the biggest talking points coming into the season is what starting lineup JJ Redick will roll out.

When asked about the starting lineup for the 2025-26 season, Redick said “it’s not that important to me.” He also said that he feels like he has 7-8 starter-level players on the team.

The Lakers’ four set starters are Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, LeBron James and DeAndre Ayton. They could either go with Rui Hachimura or Smart as their fifth starter.

At Lakers media day, Smart was asked if he cares whether he starts this season.

“I do not.

“The way I feel and the way I am. It doesn’t matter where, whether I start or come off the bench.

“Just know when I get on the floor, my presence will be made there.”

Marcus Smart feels like he has something to prove

Smart will be an important piece in Redick’s system as the head coach will have to navigate different lineups for this season.

Smart has been hampered with injuries since being traded by the Boston Celtics. That’s the last time he was able to carve out a meaningful role with a team.

The 31-year-old acknowledged that the last two years have been rough and he’s focused on reminding the world what he can do.

“People have probably forgot what I can do and what I bring to the table,” Smart said.

The upcoming season with the Lakers will be a great opportunity for Smart to get his career back on track.
