Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison spoke to the local media on Monday for his end-of-the season press conference. As expected, most of the questions were about the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, a move Harrison has said he has no regrets about.
Dallas missed the playoffs this year after reaching the NBA Finals last year with Doncic and Kyrie Irving leading the way. Not only is Doncic no longer on the Mavericks, but Irving also tore his left ACL in March and he's expected to be out until January 2026.
Harrison targeted Anthony Davis in the Doncic trade because he wanted an elite two-way player next to Irving. Davis has made 10 All-Star teams, five All-NBA teams and five All-Defensive teams in his career.
A future Hall of Famer, Davis only appeared in nine regular-season games with the Mavericks after the Doncic trade due to an adductor injury. The Chicago native averaged 20.0 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 0.6 steals and 2.2 blocks with Dallas.
Davis never looked like he was 100% with the Mavericks. It will be important for the big man to get healthy this summer, and according to Harrison, Davis won't require surgery, which is great news for Dallas.
A three-time blocks champion, Davis is 32. He turns 33 next March. The 2020 NBA champion averaged 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the Lakers and Mavericks this season in 51 games.
Davis will have to put up MVP numbers next season for Dallas to stay afloat in the rugged Western Conference since Irving will be out until January with his ACL injury.
