Mavericks Announce Anthony Davis Decision on Saturday

Anthony Davis has played three straight games for the Dallas Mavericks. The 10-time All-Star, however, is coming off a forgettable performance in Friday’s 132-111 blowout loss to the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder. Davis finished with just two points on 1-of-9 shooting as he struggled mightily against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Co.

To make matters worse, Davis sustained an injury against OKC. The 32-year-old is now dealing with a knee injury, which placed his status for Saturday's game against the Houston Rockets in doubt. The Mavs have now made their decision on Davis amid his new injury as they face the Rockets on the tail end of a back-to-back set.

Davis just recently returned from another lengthy spell on the sidelines. This time around, it was a lingering calf injury that forced him to sit out 14 straight games early in the season. Davis has been a force for the Mavs when he’s healthy, though, averaging 18.6 points on 49.3% shooting, 10.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 blocks in 29.2 minutes per contest.

Davis was seen grabbing his knee after falling to the ground in the third quarter against the Thunder. The 32-year-old looked like he was in pain after a defensive sequence against Chet Holmgren, but Davis was able to play through the issue. He was quick to play down the new injury after the game, firmly stating his intention to play against Houston on Saturday.

True enough, the Mavs are on the same page. They released their injury report for the Rockets game ahead of tip-off, and Davis was not listed. This means that the NBA champion big man will suit up against Houston, marking the first time he’s played in a back-to-back set since Oct. 26 and 27.

It is worth noting that Dallas held Davis out in its last back-to-back. He returned from his 14-game absence on Nov. 28 against his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, but was sidelined the following night against the Los Angeles Clippers due to injury management.

The fact that Davis is now healthy enough to play twice in two nights is a big development for the Mavs. This bodes well for his status moving forward as Dallas looks to work through its early-season struggles.

The Mavs enter Saturday’s game with an 8-16 record. They had won three in a row prior to the Thunder blowout and will be looking to get back to winning ways against a 15-5 Rockets side, which is currently the No. 2 seed in the West.
