Mavericks Announce Anthony Davis Development on Saturday

Anthony Davis has missed the last eight games for the Dallas Mavericks as he continues to nurse a lingering calf injury. The 32-year-old has played just five games for the Mavs this season, averaging 20.8 points on 52.0% shooting, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks in 29.8 minutes per contest. Davis has been a force for Dallas when he’s healthy, but once again, injuries have stood in the way of the 10-time All-Star’s ability to help his team succeed.

The Mavs are currently 3-10 on the season. They are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, including Friday’s 133-127 defeat to the Los Angeles Clippers. Dallas will be back in action on Sunday against the Portland Trail Blazers, and it does not seem like Davis will be available for that game, either.

There have been some internal disagreements between Davis’s camp and the Mavs front office about his calf injury. Davis’ personal medical staff reportedly wanted him to return already, but team owner Patrick Dumont apparently wanted to see medical data indicating there is no risk of reaggravating the calf injury before Davis is cleared to play.

A new development emerged on the five-time All-NBA forward-center’s injury on Saturday. The Mavs submitted their injury report for the Blazers game, and Davis has now been listed as doubtful to play in Sunday’s contest. This is a significant downgrade from Davis being tagged as questionable to play in Dallas’ last four games.

Davis still missed all four of those contests, but the fact that he is now being listed as doubtful more than 24 hours before the game appears to indicate that he will likely be sidelined for a ninth straight matchup. The downgrade from questionable to doubtful is worth noting, but there is no news on whether there has been a setback in his road to recovery.

Davis, who is now being linked to trade rumors following the firing of general manager Nico Harrison, does not appear to be ready to make his return on Sunday. If he sits out again, his next chance to play will be on Monday as the Mavs battle the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second night of a back-to-back set.
