Klay Thompson has thrived in a bench role for the Dallas Mavericks this 2025-26 season. In 43 games, he's averaging 11.7 points on 38% shooting from deep, along with 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
Earlier this January, he had a seven-game stretch where he put up 17.4 points on 50% shooting, while also recording 2.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists. The Mavs went 4-3 during that stretch.
However, Thompson missed Dallas' showdown with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday due to left knee soreness. He was not on the Mavs' initial injury report before being added hours before the contest.
Head coach Jason Kidd did express hope that Thompson would be available when the Mavs play the the Charlotte Hornets in the second game of a back-to-back.
That said, it's no surprise that Thompson was upgraded to "available" after being initially listed as "probable."
Cooper Flagg also missed the Mavs' game against the Timberwolves, but he should be available since he was not on the injury report for the Hornets clash.
While both Thompson and Flagg are back after a brief spell on the sidelines, Dallas will be without Naji Marshall on Thursday. The Mavs gave him the day off for rest purposes.
Marshall has been sensational for the Mavs this season. In fact, over their last 10 games, he has elevated his game and has averaged 20.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals.
Thompson certainly needs to step up and help fill the offensive hole created by Marshall's absence.
