Mavericks Announce Klay Thompson News Amid Trade Rumors

Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson is in the midst of the least productive season of his decorated 13-year career. In 23 games played this season, the 35-year-old has averaged 11.0 points on 36.6% shooting, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists. The good news is that he’s still knocking down 2.7 triples per game, albeit on a career-low 35.4% clip. Apart from his three-pointers, however, Thompson’s numbers this season are either lower or close to his production rate as a rookie during the 2011-12 season.

Thompson, who has recently been linked to a potential trade away from Dallas, was out of action in the Mavs’ last game due to an ankle injury. On Thursday, the team made an announcement about his status ahead of Friday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets.

Thompson joined the Mavs in the summer of 2024 via a sign-and-trade deal. After 11 years with the Golden State Warriors, the four-time NBA champion shooting guard decided to take his talents to Dallas.

Thompson played 72 games for the Mavs in his first year, starting all of them. He opened the 2025-26 campaign as the starting shooting guard, but head coach Jason Kidd decided to demote him to a bench role seven games into the season. Since then, Thompson has started just once in his last 16 appearances.

On Tuesday, reports surfaced about Thompson’s potential exit from Dallas. NBA reporter Shams Charania of ESPN discussed the possibility of Thompson leaving the Mavs in the event that they trade Anthony Davis away and embrace a full rebuild. According to Charania, teams across the league are aware that Thompson “prefers to be part of a contender over the remaining two years of his three-year, $50 million deal.”

While the Mavs have not issued an official statement on Thompson’s future with the team, they announced on Thursday that he has recovered from his injury. Thompson sat out Saturday’s 122-109 win against the Houston Rockets due to a sore knee, which was the second night of a back-to-back set.

The Mavs have not listed Thompson on the injury report for Friday’s game against Brooklyn, which means that he is expected to suit up and take on his usual role on the bench.

For now, Thompson will continue to do what he can to help the Mavs, who are currently 9-16 on the season. However, Thompson’s name will be worth monitoring as the February trade deadline draws closer.
