The Dallas Mavericks are expected to complete a trade for Marcus Sasser next week after emerging as the leading suitor for the young Detroit Pistons guard earlier this week.

NBA insider Marc Stein provided an update Wednesday, noting that the anticipated deal cannot become official until July 6.

“Updates to last night’s Late Night Intel:

Norm Powell’s two-year Chicago deal features a team option in Year 2.

Houston opted for the two-year deal with Marcus Smart covered in this piece.

Dallas’ expected trade for Detroit’s Marcus Sasser must wait until July 6.”

Stein also expanded on the situation in his latest edition of The Stein Line, reiterating that Dallas remains in the strongest position to acquire Sasser.

“As The Stein Line first reported Monday morning, Dallas has emerged as a leading suitor (or even the leading suitor) to trade for Detroit’s Marcus Sasser.”

“Such a trade would be expected to land Sasser with his hometown Mavericks via a trade exception that creates extra financial flexibility for the Pistons’ various free agency pursuits. It would likewise position Dallas, by absorbing Sasser’s $5.2 million salary for next season, to offer the former No. 25 overall pick more of a role than he managed in Detroit.”

The proposed deal appears to benefit both franchises. Detroit would gain additional salary flexibility as it continues reshaping its roster during free agency, while Dallas would add a young guard with room to expand his role.

Sasser, 25, averaged 5.2 points, 2.0 assists and 1.0 rebound while shooting 39% from the field and 41.5% from 3-point range across 38 games during the 2025-26 season. Selected with the 25th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, he has shown promise as a floor spacer despite limited opportunities in Detroit.

Stein also reported that the Pistons remain focused on strengthening their frontcourt after acquiring Isaiah Joe to bolster their backcourt earlier this offseason.

If completed, the move would mark another significant offseason addition for the Mavericks as new president Masai Ujiri continues reshaping the roster around rookie cornerstone Cooper Flagg. Dallas has been linked to several trade targets in recent days, with Sasser appearing to be among the franchise’s most attainable acquisitions.
