The Dallas Mavericks may have stumbled upon something during Monday’s Summer League action. They gave Sergio De Larrea, the 25th overall pick of the 2026 NBA Draft, the basketball and let him go to work against a Memphis Grizzlies team with Cameron Boozer and Cedric Coward. In the end, De Larrea stood tall, recording an impressive 16-point, 12-assist double-double in a 96-88 victory over the Grizzlies.
De Larrea has excellent size for either guard position, more so as a point guard. He has plenty of experience playing against grown men in Europe, so Summer League is not going to faze him. And it didn’t. Despite commanding heavy usage, he did turn the ball over just four times, which is not exactly great, but far better than anyone would expect from someone who is in his early days as a primary playmaker.
After the game, the Mavericks rookie confirmed that he did feel comfortable with the role he played on Monday, and this could be his long-term positional home moving forward.
“I think it was good. … I think that we made good connections with all of the guys, so I would say I feel comfortable with playing point guard,” De Larrea said, via Noah Weber of The Smoking Cuban.

It is never a good idea to base a judgment of a player solely on their Summer League performance (on either end of the good-bad spectrum), but Mavericks fans can get excited over what they saw from the 20-year-old Spanish international.
He was fluid with the ball, and his size allows him to see over defenders. This allows him to maximize his talent and natural feel as a passer. And with the Mavericks looking for answers at point guard, especially amid Kyrie Irving’s injury, De Larrea could very well be the answer for the long run, if all goes according to plan.
