Mavericks outclassed by Heat in 15-point loss

The Dallas Mavericks fell to the Miami Heat on Tuesday night, 125-110.

Though the Mavericks led by six at the end of the first quarter, the Heat outscored the Mavericks 46-32 in the second quarter to take the lead into halftime and never look back.

Yes, that’s a 46-point second quarter for Miami.

Overall, the Mavericks simply looked outmatched against the Heat’s depth, spacing, and veteran play. Of course, Dallas was without Kristaps Porzingis and Maxi Kleber, which weakened  an already vulnerable big rotation, but it’s doubtful they would have changed the outcome.

Dallas’ frontline rotation is in trouble. Whether that’s on the glass, defending the rim, or having the ability to step out and defend on the perimeter, they lack efficiency in all areas. In games, or a playoff series, against an All-Star big, like tonight vs. Bam Adebayo, the Mavericks have no answer.

In Porzingis’ spot in the starting lineup, Jalen Brunson got the start, finishing with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists on 10-of-13 shooting.

Brunson has been one of the few bright spots for Dallas to start the year as he’s been able to breakdown the opposing defense, creating shots for himself or others. Going forward, Jason Kidd has something to think about with Brunson being a potential starter in place of Dwight Powell as spacing has been a big issue for the Mavericks offensively.

Luka Doncic led the Mavericks with 33 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists on a tough 10-of-24 shooting as the Heat made him work all night, sending more than one defender his way.

It’s back to the drawing board for Kidd and the Mavericks on Wednesday as they play the San Antonio Spurs on the road.
