Mavericks re-sign Dwight Powell on camp deal

The Mavericks have brought back Dwight Powell. Whether he’s still with them when the season begins remains to be seen.

Dallas announced Powell’s signing Friday along with its 19-man training camp roster. The deal is believed to be non-guaranteed, and Marc Stein reports that the Mavericks have not ruled out finding room for Powell on the regular season roster.

The contract is likely to include Exhibit 9 language, though that has not been confirmed. Exhibit 9 limits a team’s financial obligation if a player on a non-guaranteed camp deal is injured during camp or the preseason.

Making the roster could be the harder part. Dallas has 14 players on fully guaranteed standard contracts, with center Moussa Cisse on a partially guaranteed deal that becomes fully guaranteed if he remains with the team Oct. 1. A trade or another roster move could change the math.

Powell, 35, has spent most of his career with the Mavericks since arriving as a rookie in 2014. He averaged 3.3 points and 4.1 rebounds in 63 games last season.

The numbers are modest. His standing within the organization is considerably larger. Powell has been valued for his professionalism and leadership, and he joined a recent minicamp organized by Kyrie Irving in Los Angeles.

He wanted to play at least one more season. The Mavericks are giving him a shot at making it No. 13 in Dallas.
