Miami Heat Already Have Two Superstar Backup Plans if Giannis Antetokounmpo Pursuit Fails

The Miami Heat may still view Giannis Antetokounmpo as their dream offseason target. With no guarantee on the table, the franchise already appears to have contingency plans lined up if that pursuit falls apart.

However, according to South Florida Sun-Sentinel insider Ira Winderman, Miami is expected to remain aggressive in the trade market regardless of whether the Milwaukee Bucks ultimately move Antetokounmpo.

During an appearance on 104.3 WQAM, Winderman revealed that the Heat could quickly pivot toward Kawhi Leonard or Ja Morant if Giannis becomes unattainable.

“Honestly, if they get a signal it’s not going to be Giannis, I think they explore Kawhi. I think they explore Ja,” he said. “You can’t get stale, especially in this market.”

The comments arrive after reports that Miami seriously pursued the Greek Freak before the February trade deadline. ESPN’s Shams Charania earlier reported the Heat constructed an offer centered around Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, additional players, and multiple draft picks.

Milwaukee ultimately decided to hold onto its superstar, believing stronger offers could emerge during the offseason.

Miami still possesses attractive trade assets, including young players such as Nikola Jovic, Pelle Larsson, and Kasparas Jakucionis, along with three tradable first-round picks. Reports also suggest the Heat are willing to discuss nearly everyone on the roster except Bam Adebayo.

While Antetokounmpo would remain the franchise-changing swing, Leonard and Morant may represent more realistic alternatives.

Miami Heat Have Major Tasks Apart From Giannis Antetokounmpo

After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019, the Miami Heat enters the offseason facing pressure to make major changes. While the organization continues to monitor Giannis Antetokounmpo’s availability, the Heat know that one blockbuster move alone may not fix everything.

Giannis remains the dream target, but other names have already surfaced in speculation. Team president Pat Riley has repeatedly shown he is willing to chase star power aggressively, and this summer may be his most important swing yet.

Miami’s lack of depth was exposed throughout the season. Outside of Adebayo and Kel’el Ware, the frontcourt lacked reliable size, while several role players struggled to provide consistent two-way production.

Improving the bench with tougher rotational pieces and dependable veterans will be critical if the Heat want to compete with deeper contenders across the East.

If Miami truly wants to return to title contention quickly, this offseason must become about more than simply chasing Giannis.
