The Miami Heat re-signed Point Guard Davion Mitchell to a two-year $24 million contract on Saturday afternoon. The news was reported by ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania. Mitchell was traded to the Miami Heat in February 2024. He is coming off the best season of his career. Mitchell played the best basketball of his career in Miami. He averaged 10.3 points and shot a whopping 44.7% from three-point range during his time in Miami. Will the guard continue being a solid contributor for the Heat?

Miami Heat Offseason Outlook

The Miami Heat entered the offseason with no clear sense of direction. Miami was unable to pull off a trade for Kevin Durant because of their reported reluctance to part with young players and the No. 20 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Miami ended up drafting Illinois Guard Kasparas Jakucionis with that pick. Mitchell returns to a Heat team with a good roster, but not one that is championship-ready. He will come back to play alongside the trio of Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, and Bam Adebayo.

Final Thoughts

Mitchell is expected to be the team’s starting shooting guard again next season. This a solid move, but not a needle-mover. Team President Pat Riley, one of the sharpest minds in basketball history, has been unable to land a big free agent in years. The rationale for not going all-in on Durant was Miami wanted to retain its assets in case Giannis Antetokounmpo became available. Mitchell is a good first move, but hopefully, Riley has more up his sleeve.
