Miami Heat Will No Longer Trade Andrew Wiggins

It looks like the Miami Heat will no longer trade NBA champion Andrew Wiggins.

Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting that the Heat are planning to keep Wiggins, who was in trade talks earlier this offseason.

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra spoke about Wiggins with reporters at Summer League on Saturday. The coach sounded like someone who will be coaching Wiggins next season.

“I think there’s still real opportunity for growth with him as he gets comfortable with us,” Spoelstra said about Wiggins. “He’s already down in Miami right now and will be bringing his family in. He’s going to be here most of August and September, I think just to get more acclimated. And I think that’s really important for him.”

Andrew Wiggins will make $28.2 million next season. He has a player option worth $30.2 million for the 2026-27 campaign. 

The first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft out of Kansas, Wiggins averaged 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists for the Golden State Warriors and Heat last season. The swingman shot 44.8% from the field, 37.4% from beyond the arc and 76.3% from the free-throw line. 

Wiggins, who was traded by the Warriors to the Heat in the Jimmy Butler deal last season, has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Warriors and Heat. He has career averages of 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists. 

A Toronto native, Wiggins won the 2014-15 Rookie of the Year Award with the Timberwolves and the 2022 title with the Warriors. He made his only All-Star team in 2022 as a member of the Warriors.

The Cleveland Cavaliers swept the Heat in the first round of the 2025 playoffs. Miami tried to trade for Kevin Durant this offseason, but Durant was traded by the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets.

After failing to get Durant, the Heat acquired Norman Powell from the Los Angeles Clippers.
