Michael Jordan stirs pot on Stephen Curry-Magic Johnson debate

After Stephen Curry said he was the greatest point guard in NBA history over Ervin "Magic" Johnson, discussions erupted among NBA pundits, fans and former players.

On Tuesday, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith agreed with Curry's statement. Then came word Wednesday from the GOAT himself, Michael Jordan, whose words carry a lot more weight than Smith's.

"Although greatest of anything is always a debate, I beg to differ on greatest point guard of all time," Jordan texted Smith at 5:54 a.m. "Magic Johnson is easily the best point guard of all time. Steph Curry is very close but not in front of Magic. You must define point guard to really have a serious debate."

Jordan has never been Curry's greatest fan. On "The Today Show" earlier this year, Jordan said, "He's a great player but not a Hall of Famer yet, though."

That's a ridiculous assertion. Curry is easily a first-ballot Hall of Famer and has been for about half a decade.

But Jordan is spot-on in the second half of his text message to Smith.

How are we defining point guard? Is it strictly how well you get your teammates involved and facilitate an offense? If so, Johnson — who has five NBA titles to Curry's four — easily clears Curry in this regard.

However, as the modern NBA has continued to evolve, offense facilitation is no longer the sole responsibility of the point guard.

"Steph Curry is by far the best shooter of all time," Jordan said. "Yes, his movement creates shots for his teammates... But Magic Johnson invented the triple-double."

One could argue that Johnson's height was the biggest factor in his stardom. A 6-foot-9 point guard was unheard of during that era. Meanwhile, the 6-foot-2 Curry is usually the smallest player on the court on nearly every possession and yet still dominates.

Without a clear-cut definition of point guard, it's tricky debating Johnson vs. Curry. Despite the two being point guards, they're completely different players and have unique skill sets.
