Michael Porter Jr.: Nuggets contract extension talks 'going smooth'

Michael Porter Jr. is headed for restricted free agency after the 2021-22 season. However, it appears he's close to finalizing an extension with the Denver Nuggets. 

"Everything is sounding great, in the direction that I'd like to be headed," Porter said, according to Mike Singer of the Denver Post. "Nothing is set in stone, but everything is going smooth as far as that goes."

The Nuggets picked up Porter's option for the 2021-22 season in December. 

Porter has established himself as one of Denver's core pieces early in his career alongside Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. At one point, it didn't seem like he was going to flourish in the NBA after missing his rookie season following back surgery. However, he has blossomed into a solid contributor. 

The 23-year-old averaged 19 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 54.2% from the field and 44.5% from deep last season. His 19 points per game ranked third on the team behind only Jokic and Murray. 

It's unclear what kind of deal Porter is seeking. However, he should see a hefty raise from his four-year, $15 million rookie contract. The max Porter could receive is $168 million on a rookie contract extension. 

Denver is also in talks to extend Aaron Gordon, who is entering the final year of his contract at $16.4 million.
