Mid-Summer NBA Eastern Conference Playoff Forecast

The NBA’s Eastern Conference, for the first time in a long time, actually seems to have overtaken the West as the NBA’s better and deeper conference.

Big names like LeBron James and (we think) Kawhi Leonard are back in the East after years away; Jaylen Brown and Giannis Antetokounmpo find themselves in new and improved settings; and Tyrese Haliburton and Jayson Tatum are finally going to be back in action for a full regular season for the first time since the 2024-25 season.

Not to mention the defending NBA Cup Champion and NBA Champion New York Knicks kept most of their double-winning core together and come into this season with a new sense of freedom that they didn’t have before, which will keep them firmly in the picture at the top of the conference as well.

And then you have other prominent teams who are starting to get desperate to make something happen and prove that they are worthy of being mentioned among the league’s best such as the Cavaliers led by Mitchell, Harden, and Mobley, and the Detroit Pistons who were one of the surprisingly great teams from last season.

You can tell just by looking at it that the East is going to be a bloodbath this season, much like the West has been for most of our lifetimes now, and it’s a breath of fresh air to feel like you have genuinely no idea how it could go.

So let’s take a look at how the East will look by season’s end. 

1- Cleveland Cavaliers (54-28)

If anything, Cleveland is built to win a lot of regular season games, as shown by their performances in the last few years during the regular season. They’ve been a wagon from October to April, and you can’t deny that.

James Harden and Donovan Mitchell give you enough offense on any given night to win, and the offseason additions they have made are good enough to give them a slight edge as the No. 1 seed in this forecast.

2- New York Knicks (53-29)

New York will be possibly even better this season than they were on their journey to winning the NBA Championship, and that’s because they will all get to play freely and not have so much pressure on them to get it done this season.

The hard part for New York is over, now it’s about cutting loose, having fun, and seeing if they can do it all over again, which is what makes them so much more dangerous this season. Not many expect them to repeat, but that’s what could get some other teams in trouble with New York: just expecting that they’re letting off the gas after getting one.

3- Philadelphia 76ers (53-29)

Philly has an entirely revamped team full of All-Star-level players who all fit into specific roles when put together on this team, but all of them are capable of doing more than they’re probably going to be asked to do and that’s what makes them dangerous.

If at any time they need to change things up, they have the personnel to do so. The versatility on this roster is possibly the best in the NBA, and though there is concern that a lot of them will miss a lot of games, it’s not going to matter much. 

This is a team that will win a lot of games just because they have better players than you straight up, which makes them a lock to be a top four seed.

4- Miami Heat (52-30)

Don’t let anyone who’s down on Miami and saying that they’ll be lucky to be a playoff team fool you. Miami has enough shooting and enough defense to win as many games as they please in the regular season, as this is a much better overall team than the one without Giannis that just won 44 games last season.

Yet people still think Miami is going to be scraping by and be stuck in a play-in situation this season? As we said, don’t listen to anyone who believes that. It’s very likely that Miami finishes as a top three defensive unit in the league, and in this system we will continue to see leaps from players like Pelle Larsson and Davion Mitchell and a return to form for Giannis and Klay Thompson. 

5- Detroit Pistons (49-33)

Detroit is a team that no one seems to have a grip on. 

Some think they will replicate last season’s success because they believe Cade is that good and the rest of the team is possibly better than it was last season, and then you have some who think they’ll be fine, but nowhere near as good as last season.

While the loss of players like Beef Stew and Tobias Harris will hurt, pickups like Isaiah Joe and Ebuka Okorie will prove to be huge impacts immediately that help Cade not have to do EVERYTHING on offense, and because of that I believe they’ll be in line to win a lot of games again this season, even though I think they won’t win as many as last season.

6- Boston Celtics (49-33)

All eyes are now on Jayson Tatum because everyone is dying to see if he can do what Jaylen Brown did last season, and everyone is dying to make fun of him if he’s unable to do what Jaylen Brown did because that’s the fun thing to do for some reason.

Jayson Tatum will help Boston win a lot of games, but he will play in a different way than Brown did and if it doesn’t equate to as many wins as Brown then so be it, but that’s not a knock on Tatum. 

It’s simply a sign of how good the East has gotten and that the style of play Tatum has doesn’t equate to the same exact result that Brown has, but if you’re winning more than you’re losing and you get into the playoffs, who really cares?

7- Orlando Magic (46-36)

Orlando could be a real boom-or-bust team this season, but I’m going to say they remain right in the middle once again which probably isn’t where they want to be.

Anthony Black’s progression is something that many want to see, as he showed flashes of being capable of more than he was asked to do last season. But Paolo Banchero needs to be better in all facets of the game if this team wants to truly take the next step, and we do know that when Paolo decides to go for it, he’s one of the most unstoppable players there is because he really just doesn’t stop.

A new head coach should be what Orlando needs to get more out of those two players, but also the entire team on both ends of the floor, and it will see them at least battling for a play-in spot, but hopefully even more. 

8- Indiana Pacers (45-37)

Indiana is a team that many assume are just going to come right back into the title picture because Tyrese Haliburton is back, but we have to seriously assess the situation in the East.

It’s gotten a lot better since Indiana’s magical run to the Finals, and Indiana themselves have a lot of work to do to keep up with how good it’s gotten. So while many believe they’ll just be a playoff lock, I’m here to guess that they have a tougher time than they’ll want to getting back to the playoffs, and they’ll have to fight through the play-in to get there.

9- Toronto Raptors (42-40)

As it stands, you have to assume that Kawhi Leonard is going to miss time this season due to the ongoing investigation because if he doesn’t miss time, it would look just as shady as the situation he’s caught up in right now. 

And even if he isn’t suspended, there’s a big chance that he misses games for Toronto from injury, which could severely limit what the team is able to do.

Honestly speaking, this team is fine without Kawhi, but they are nothing special. Especially in this season’s version of the East. They just don’t have enough without Kawhi to survive, so their best bet is to hope Kawhi plays every single game this season, because if he does, then that’s how they land a higher seed. 

10- Chicago Bulls (41-41)

After taking a break from their usual vacation to the play-in, Chicago will book their ticket again for their grand return this season.

All jokes aside, if Caleb Wilson comes in and immediately provides the two-way stabilization that he is expected to, then that automatically makes Chicago a sneaky playoff-caliber team this season, as the rest of the team around him is already quite good. They’ve just been missing that true elevating talent, and now that they have it, Chicago could get very good, and do it fast.

11- Washington Wizards (34-48)

The Anthony Davis situation is a big storyline, as he’s still with the team though he very clearly doesn’t want to be or care to be. It’s possible that he’s traded at literally any time between now and the deadline, but it’s also possible that he’s kept, especially if Washington ends up being a little better than expected.

AJ Dybantsa’s arrival is anticipated for the Wizards and he is expected to make a big impact immediately, but it probably won’t be an impact big enough to get this team which is still dysfunctional at the moment. 

12- Milwaukee Bucks (32-50)

Milwaukee basically has the skeleton of last season’s Miami Heat team along with Ryan Rollins who was a great breakout player who stayed behind in Milwaukee after Giannis and Portis were dealt to bring in half of Miami’s roster.

And the skeleton of that team is actually not as bad as people are acting like, and there’s a possibility of them winning a few more games than expected because it is a pretty talented roster overall. 

But because it does seem like Tyler Herro isn’t there to stay, and he would be Milwaukee’s best player this season for as long as he is there, we can’t be too keen to say they will be WAY better, only a bit better. 

13- Atlanta Hawks (31-51)

Atlanta is a team that most are higher on based on what they saw last season, but they’re a team that I can’t get behind. 

The roster construction is very weak compared to most others in the East, and Jalen Johnson is more likely just a flash in the pan who will return to Earth after an All-NBA season. 

There are many limitations to his game including his size at his position and his defense, and if your No. 1 guy is going to have that many things we have to be concerned about on top of a roster that’s just not up to par with the rest of the East, it’s hard to be convinced they’ll be as good as they were last season.

14- Charlotte Hornets (25-57)

Losing LaMelo Ball sucks, and it’s going to hurt the flow and energy that Charlotte played with at the end of last season. 

But beyond that, they’ll be taking a big step back due to the probability that they’ll actually be playing teams who are trying to win more this season than they were last season.

Last season, Charlotte was probably the biggest beneficiary of all the terrible basketball that was being played after the All-Star break, as they racked up a lot of meaningless wins against teams who were obviously smashing the self-destruct button on their season in hopes of landing the highest pick possible in the stacked draft class that we just saw.

15- Brooklyn Nets (18-64)

To put it in the simplest terms, Brooklyn will be Brooklyn this season (bad).
