Mikal Bridges gives his opinion on the Nets being called the Knicks’ “Little brother”
USA TODAY Sports

The New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets have a unique dynamic, with both teams being from the same city. Since the Knicks are the more established franchise, it’s natural to have a bigger fan base, which Mikal Bridges noticed in his first year in Brooklyn.

Unfortunately for the Nets, the organization felt this discrepancy during the most recent game between the two teams. Barclays Center was packed by Knicks fans, which would’ve irked any NBA player, let alone members of the Brooklyn roster.

“Trying to win, that’s the biggest thing. The only thing that helps is that the Nets just came to Brooklyn not too long ago. Basically, the Nets are the little bros of New York because of the Knicks. The only thing that helps us out is that the Knicks haven’t won, when was the last time they won something?” Mikal said in the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast with Carmelo Anthony.

Mikal feels the NY rivalry is different than the LA rivalry

Mikal said that the Knicks don’t have enough bragging rights over the Nets because the Knicks’ most successful period came back in the 1970s. He does not even know when the Knicks won a title because it was before he was born.

“It’s different from the Lakers and Clippers. The Lakers have run off dynasties for all these years… For this aspect, the Knicks are the Knicks. Everyone in New York is a Knicks fan. The only thing you get away with is what do you really have over us? When was the last time they won a championship? I have no clue,” Mikal continued.

The Nets will keep competing against the Knicks

The Knicks have the upper hand for the 2023/24 season; however, in the past, Brooklyn was a title contender because the Nets had superstars like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

After that short-lived era, the Knicks have taken over the city. However, with players like Mikal and Cameron Thomas on the Nets, Brooklyn will bounce back quicker than most people think. The team is in a rough patch this season, but with the foundation they have with Mikal, Cam, and Nic Claxton, the future is bright.
