The Milwaukee Bucks have clinched the fifth seed in the NBA Eastern Conference after defeating the Detroit Pistons 125-119 on Friday night. It was also the Bucks’ seventh win in a row.
Going into the game, Milwaukee needed to win just one of their two remaining games, both against the Pistons, to clinch the fifth seed. Their hopes of reaching as high as the fourth seed evaporated when the Indiana Pacers defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday.
Now, the Bucks will close out the regular season against the Pistons and then enter the NBA Playoffs to face the Pacers in the first round for the second year in a row. As fans may recall, it was Indiana who eliminated Milwaukee from the postseason last year.
As has been the case for the majority of the season, the Bucks were led to victory by two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. Playing without Damian Lillard again (as he continues to deal with a blood clot in his calf), the Greek Freak willed his team to victory in a game that was gritty, physical, and included multiple technical fouls.
What is more, Giannis set a new franchise record in the win. He had his 11th triple-double of the season, putting up 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 15 assists to go with a steal and a block.
His 11 triple-doubles in the 2024-25 season break the previous record of ten, which he set last year. It was also Giannis’ 56th career triple-double, which is by far the most in franchise history. The next closest is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who had eight.
Giannis’ 56 triple-doubles rank 12th in NBA history. Larry Bird, who had 59, is the next player that he can pass on the all-time list.
Among active players, only Russell Westbrook (203), LeBron James (122), Luka Doncic (82), James Harden (79), and Domantas Sabonis (68) have more.
Perhaps what is most exciting and impressive about Giannis’ new record is that he has recorded four of his 11 triple-doubles in the last five games in which he has played. In doing so, he has helped ensure that the Bucks did not fall in the standings and, instead, remained in the fifth seed.
This, of course, sets them up for that aforementioned opening series against the Indiana Pacers. Had they fallen to the sixth seed, they would have had to play the New York Knicks.
In his last five games, all Milwaukee wins, Giannis has put up the following stat lines:
